Гены – это в каком-то смысле довольно распутные сущности: они формируют непостоянные союзы, когда это способствует их собственной передаче. За 4 миллиарда лет существования генов эволюция создала молекулярные инструменты как для внедрения генов в геномы, так и для их удаления.
На таких неожиданных примерах, как поведение крыс и ворон, строение земляных червей и лишайников, кипение клеточного бульона и даже взаимодействие среди пиратов и благотворительных организаций, автор показывает, что, так же как гены и клетки, каждое существо стремится к сотрудничеству – впрочем, в собственных интересах. И противоречия тут нет: ведь именно объединение с кем-то другим с целью выгоды и предотвращения опасности дало начало жизни и способствовало процессу эволюции. В склонности людей к взаимопомощи есть глубокий смысл. Во всех нас зашит некий биологический закон, побуждающий нас сотрудничать. А вот бессмысленное насилие, к которому иногда так склонен наш вид, – самое суровое испытание для выживания человека как вида.
Без сотрудничества не было бы жизни. Не просто «жизни в том виде, в каком мы ее знаем», а вообще никакой. Причина проста: суть жизни заключается в способности к самовоспроизведению, а значит, и к эволюции.

Сотрудничество сохраняется не потому, что нет конфликтов, а вопреки им. Конфликты возникают, потому что сотрудничество всегда сопряжено не только с выгодами, но и с затратами, а мошенники норовят урвать свой кусок, не заплатив за него.
